Spring: ESM/MSE 3054 Mechanical Behavior of Materials

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Mechanical properties and behavior of solid materials subjected to static, cyclic, and sustained loads resulting from various stress states; multiaxial failure criteria; behavior of cracked bodies; fatigue of materials; creep of materials; microstructure-property relationships (3H, 3C). TOPICS COVERED include Fundamentals of materials and mechanics, Elastic deformation, Stress transformation and failure criteria, Plastic deformation, Fracture, Fatigue, and Creep.

Fall: MSE 5154 Processing Science in Advanced Manufacturing

(Newly-Developed Graduate-Level Course)

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This manufacturing science course is open to all graduate students and senior-year undergrads who are interested in the state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies of materials and how these technologies influence our strategy of materials design. Topics on manufacturing technologies are across multiple length scales, from macro/meso-scale (such as additive manufacturing or 3D printing of metals, ceramics, and polymers; composite processing), to micro/nano scale (such as thin film processing by physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition; micro- and nano-fabrication based on optical and e-beam lithography).  Emphasis will be placed on the physical processes involved in these manufacturing technologies as well as how the processes will influence the properties of emerging materials and applications.

Mentoring

Graduate Students:

Currently advising 2 postdocs and 12 graduate students, including 8 Ph.D. students and 4 Masters students (updated October 2023).

Graduated 6 Ph.D. students (2 from underrepresented groups); 4 M.S. and 6 M. Eng. students.

Ph.D. student Mackenzie Perry received the prestigious 2021 Acta Student Award.
