October 2019

Project introduction: Additive friction stir deposition (commercialized technology MELD) is an emerging solid-state technology with tremendous potential for large-scale additive manufacturing, repair, and cladding. It has salient advantages over beam-based metal additive manufacturing in residual stress control, microstructure manipulation (resulting in wrought microstructure), cost, and scalability. In this project, we are interested in exploring the use of the technology in additive repair and cladding, focusing on the 3D morphology and phase/microstructure evolution at the interface.
