Research

Joey’s research includes characterization, optimization, and application driven development of additively manufactured materials, notably metal and composite systems. Some of these systems include Al alloys, Mg alloys, Cu, NAB, steels, and a variety of composites utilizing inert or functional reinforcement phases. Additive manufacturing of these materials can be both environmental and cost savings, as well as potentially new and useful properties and performance. His experience in characterization has largely focused around the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Backscattered Diffraction, as well as mechanical testing, including fatigue work. Joey’s current work focuses around optimizing the additive manufacturing process Additive Friction Stir Deposition for repair and mesoscale design applications.
